Welcome to Winter Quarter

Welcome to winter quarter, everyone.  Please read on for updated minutes from our first meeting of the quarter. Thank you to Heidi Y. for taking the time to come to the meeting today.

MEETINGS:
Our winter quarter meetings are tentatively set for
Wednesdays from 2pm-3pm in Rm 5407

Our big push this term is recruitment.  Our Empowered.org page shows that we only have 2 slots remaining to be a complete, independent brigade. Nonetheless, we should recruit more brigaders beyond the 25 slots, to account for those who will inevitably not be able to attend the actual brigade.  We ask that every member make a presentation in each of their classes, especially the health sciences classes, inviting more students to join. This does not have to be elaborate: a short and sweet over view of what the brigade actually is, how we fund raise, and meeting dates/times is sufficient.  You can also email your instructors a PDF version of our informational flyer to post on their class websites.

BRIGADE SCHEDULED:
Our brigade dates are tentatively set for August 18 - 24, 2014

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Club Day is January 22 from noon - 1pm
You can sign up to join our club day under the "Events" section of this site
Our Campus Quad event is January 27 from noon-1pm
Please see the flyer for the Campus Quad event for more details

FUNDRAISING:
We need one of our members to take on the role of Manager of Fundraising & Donations.
S/he will be responsible for keeping track of fundraisers, follow-ups, and accounting of donations.

Here is a list of the fundraisers we went over today:
- Coffee and doughnut sale on campus
- Carwash with Nick at the parking lot of the gym where he works
- Possible raffle
- Possible slot at a local fair where we sell soda/root beer floats/face painting

For the coffee and doughnut sale on campus, we want to have this happen either by the end of this month or early February. Please go out and ask your local establishments for donations.
Their donations can be tax deductible by following these guidelines
Use this tax donation receipt template when preparing the donations with the store manager.
Global Brigades tax ID is: Global Brigades, Inc (EIN 37-1551109)

As for the car-wash, this is a project that Nick has taken on and we look forward to hearing more about the developments of that from him soon.

We brainstormed some creative ways to have another successful raffle. Last year we were able to raise $2000 by raffling off an iPad that was donated to our club along with other, smaller items.  We could very well ask local businesses to donate gift cards, services, etc to a raffle we will host at a later date.
Another idea is that we use funds from one fundraiser to purchase a big ticket item (such as an iPad) ourselves and conduct the raffle accordingly.

As spring and summer approach, we have considered getting in touch with local fairs, festivals, farmers markets, etc to host a booth that offers either cold soft drinks, root beer floats, and/or face painting.  We need a commitment from everyone to look into local events and any special rules & regulations we must observe if we host a booth.

**We want to stress to everyone the importance of our club's fundraising efforts.  We hope to see increased contribution to our fundraiser planning and execution these coming quarters.  Any extra funds that could be used to cover individual costs of the trip will be offered first to those who have contributed the most time and responsibility to the club.**

Please note, we will schedule a MANDATORY meeting at the end of this quarter to gather together all of us who are definitely going on the brigade.  If you definitely can go, or if you want to go but are not sure if you will be able to, you must come to this meeting.  The date for this is TBD.

Thank you for reading this in its entirety.  Your participation and commitment to the club is invaluable.
Have a great week and I hope to see you all at the next meeting!

- Jamie
