Hello, Brigaders!

Welcome back and I trust that all have you thoroughly enjoyed the well-deserved break.

I would like to start off by reminding everyone of the upcoming deadline for the $250 deposit in your empowered account. I felt that this was important to mention seeing how it seems like we're getting people expressing interest in coming on the brigade everyday (which is fantastic!). However, the official deadline to sign up for the brigade and the $250 deposit in your empowered account is Tuesday, April 30th, 2013. If you have not yet signed up on empowered, visit the Medical/Dental Brigades Empowered site, click on Become a Member to help us fund raise and become more involved or click on Volunteer with Us to come on the brigade then create your profile.

In other important news, I have finally received a response from Foothill's accountant concerning our ASFC Budget Request. We were not granted the entire $17,250.00 that we requested, but we were approved for $7500.00. During our meeting last Friday, the club decided that instead of using these funds to help members pay their individual ways, these funds will instead go toward our $5000.00 medication and supplies fund.

With this being said, money earned from club fundraising will now be evenly dispersed among members to help everyone achieve the $1500.00 required to participate on the brigade. However, because this brigade and the Medical/Dental Brigades club in general is a team effort, everyone must put in their fair share in order to receive funds raised from group events.

Now, what does this mean "fair share"? It's simple! Do what you can to contribute to the success of our upcoming brigade and support Brigades at Foothill College. If you are unable to attend the meetings or certain fundraisers due to your schedule, that's alright! There are plenty of ways to help and become involved such as promoting events, conducting personal fundraisers on your own time, help organizing events, etc. Also, please never hesitate to contact Gabe or myself if you have any questions on the ways you can help. We will always find a job for you! Also, remember that everyone should also keeping up on their own personal fundraising.

Gabe and I will construct a spreadsheet of all our events and the names of members who were involved and post it on the blog so you may keep up on your progress. You must become involved in a minimum number of events/contribute to the success of our brigade to be able to receive funds from club events.

Speaking of club events..

Brigades will have a very busy schedule ahead but here are some events to start thinking about and preparing for:

  • Our Second De Anza Flea Market- Brigades is looking to have our second De Anza Flea Market in June. This means get back on collecting donations from friends, family, craigslist, etc.
  • On Campus Tabling Events- Reach out to your local businesses and ask if they would donate any of their products to be sold on campus. With the weather getting warmer, let's look into setting up a lemonade/popsicle stand a few times a month.
  • Off Campus Tabling Events- Contact your local stores and ask if they would allow us to set up a table out in front asking for medicine donations as well as supplies for our Charla (stickers, children's books, crayons, etc.)
Other than collecting monetary donations and medical supplies, we also ask that you all reach out to your friends, family, etc. for old suitcases that they would be willing to donate. These will be used to haul all of our medications to Honduras for our mobile clinic.

Also, don't wait for us to tell you to do something! If you have ideas for events, let us know or feel free to organize it yourself!

With the brigade date approaching, here are some things that will be discussed further in tomorrow's meeting:
  • Passport and Visa Requirements
  • Vaccinations
  • Charla Preparation/Spanish Workshops
To prep for our Spanish Workshops, please download this Spanish Cheat Sheet.
This will provide you with commonly used phrases and useful terms when in the clinic. I don't ask that you memorize it all but please be familiar with them for knowing them will be extremely beneficial both during the brigade and your overall experience in Honduras.

See you all tomorrow.
